Tiergarten, the nicest park in Berlin

In the sixteenth century, the Tiergarten started life as a hunting ground and the game reserve for the elect princes of Brandenberg. It was transformed into a park in the eighteenth century. Between 1833 and 1838, the landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné constructed waterfalls and lakes and decked the Tiergarten in such splendour that it was soon recognized as one of the prettiest parks in Europe. Following the Second World War, Berliners were forced to deforest some of it in order to secure fuel for themselves. Today it is restored to its former glory and still stands as one of the finest parks in Europe.
