In the centre of East Berlin
This square was known as 'Marx-Engels Square' during the time of the GDR. It is there that the Republican Palace was built to epitomise the popular culture of Germany and the East, in place of the former castle. Nowadays, the building is no longer open to the public. However, the city's major cultural centres are to be found all around this square, namely the old museum (Alte Museum), the museum island (Museumsinsel), the Berlin dome (Berliner Dom), Alexanderplatz and, last but not least, the Brandenburg Gate that you'll discover as you make your way along the famous Unter den Linden Avenue.
