The summer of '36
The Olympic stadium was constructed over the period 1934-36 for the 21st Olympic Games that were held in the summer of 1936, at the same time as the Deutsche Sportforum and the Waldbühne. The stadium is a typical example of the grandiose architectural style of the Nazi regime, and was designed to hold 110,000 spectators.
The circumference of the central arena measures 840 metres. The whole structure was renovated for the first time in 1966 with a view to the 1974 World Cup. It was also temporarily closed for a second time for further works, and the overall cost of reconstruction has been estimated at 517,000,000 DM. The stadium will continue to play host to major sporting events and concerts.
