New Guard
Not far from the Humboldt University on the famous avenue "Unter den Linden", the monument to victims killed by fascism and military aggression, formally the "Neue Wache", was built by Schinkel in 1857, on the site where the emperor's guards used to parade. In 1919, the monument - built in the shape of a temple - became a monument to the Unknown Soldier, and kept this function under the GDR.
Since the fall of the Berlin wall, the "Neue Wache" has commemorated the victims of fascism and military aggression. The changing of the guard no longer takes place. Two plaques have been engraved in honour of the Unknown Soldier and the members of the resistance.
