If you want a taste of the seedier side of 19th-century Madrid, look no further. A former brothel, Los Gabrieles is just about the most characterful place for a drink in Madrid. You'd never imagine it to look at the facade, but the interior walls — covered in original tiles showing some pretty gruesome scenes — are something else. Drinks can be expensive but measures are generous and there's a distinct shortage of toilets. Gets packed with hormone-fuelled teenagers spilling out on to the street in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday, when the over-25s might want to move on.
