Musei Capitolini

The Capitolini Museums were built in 1471, thanks to a generous donation by Pope Sisto IV to the people of Rome of a collection of bronze statues of considerable symbolic value. The exhibition is set up in two palaces facing the Del Campidoglio Square (the New Palace and the dei Conservatori Palace). Extensions have been added onto the museums after a significant restoration project, work has been done on the Caffarelli Palace (which house the temporary exhibitions) and the Clementino Palace has been acquired. The museums include an art gallery boasting around 300 works and in which you'll be able to admire masterpieces of the Italian and world art scenes, from the Middle Ages to the 18th century (dei Conservatori Palace). An important collection of 18th century sculptures can be found in the New Palace. Be sure not to miss the 'Lupa Capitolina' and the two Caravage masterpieces, the 'Buona Ventura' and the 'San Giovanni Battista' (dei Conservatori Palace).
