The "Alte Nationalgalerie" was built by Heinrich Strack between 1866 and 1876 in line with Friedrich August Stüler's plans. Exclusively devoted to 19th century art, you can go here to see works by Rodin, Maillol and Degas, painters from the end of the Romanticism era, German impressionism and expressionism, as well as an array of sculptures, paintings and drawings from the time of the former communist regime. If this place is called the "Alte Nationalgalerie", it's to distinguish it from the "Neue Nationalgalerie" which itself forms part of the "Kulturforum" on the Potsdamer Platz. Admission is free on the first Sunday of the month and bank holidays. You can have access to all the museums on the island for 8 DM (4 DM for students and 2 DM for the unemployed).
