The largest 'avenue' in all Venice
The Grand Canal crosses the heart of the city, following the bed of an old river. Grand it certainly is, both in terms of width and the splendour of the palaces that overhang it (of which there are around 500). You can do a round trip of it, the best way being to take the line 1 public vaporetto. Every year, it also provides the setting for the commemorative naval demonstrations or regattas.
