Piazza di Spagna

This square takes its name from the Palace of the Spanish Embassy that gives onto it, opposite the Colonne dell'Immacolata, a column that serves a decorative purpose for the Trinité des Monts Church and the Palazzo di Propaganda Fide. The centre comprises the Della Barcaccia Fountain, the work of Pietro and Gian Lorenzo Bernini., and the shape of which was requested by Pope Urbain VII to commemorate the legend of the boat that was washed up on the square following the flooding of the Tiber.
