The origin of the Trastevere area
The Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere dates back to the pre-Constantinian era and was probably the first church in Rome to officially celebrate Christian forms of worship. It was built between 217-222 BC, and its current appearance -with the 17th century wooden portico and ceiling, the imposing choir and apse mosaics illustrating the stories of the Virgin (1291), the altar with its precious 6th century table of the Madonna della Clemenza and the 12th century campanile- is the result of many changes. The facade, modified in 1720 in line with Carlo Fontana's drawing, is a perfect match to the rest of the Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere.
