A masterpiece of Lombardy Roman art
Constructed by the Bishop Ambrosia between 379 and 386 to become the Basilica of Martyrs, in 397 this building was home to the remains of a group of monks. Damaged on several occasions (starting with the crumbling of the dome in 1196), it has undergone all manner of renovation and repair works, especially in the 10th century thanks to the contribution of the Benedictines. Inside, admire Volvinio's golden altar (9th century), the sarcophagus of Stilicone (4th century) and the remains of Saint Ambrosia, patron saint of the city. You can access the Basilica Museum via the entrance to the presbytery.
