Built in 1850 on the foundations of a modest theatre, this has become the chosen venue for many a major cultural event in the city of Madrid. Its colourful history is studded with stories of closure, and threats of demolition and restoration. In 1997, it was re-opened, with symphony performances moved to the National Auditorium. The original construction of this building was financed by the creation of a tax on oak. It is now listed as a national monument.
