Even though the Church of San Nicolás hasn't kept its primitive structure whole, but instead has elements from different periods, this is Madrid's oldest church. It has some important medieval elements that make it almost unique. Such is the case of the tower, a Romanic Mudejar belfry from the 12th century. Juan de Herrera, the architect of El Escorial, was buried in this church.
