Piazza Navona

Its oval shape and large size (275 meters long and 106 meters wide) are reminiscent of the original structure, that of the Olympic stadium built by the emperor Domitian in 86 B.C., of which only the ruins are left. Its former concave ground was filled with water which made it an ideal place for bathing as well as for water games during the summer until the 19th century. There are three fountains in the middle of the square: the Fontana del Moro, the Fontana dei Fiumi del Bernini and the Fontana del Nettuno, surrounded by two churches: the Sant'Agnese in Agone and de Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore.
