On the hill, at the centre of the Roman world
The Piazza del Campidoglio, centre of Rome and seat of the local government, was designed in all its glory by Michaelangelo in 1536. It represents the most perfect interpretation of how a square should be at the time of the Renaissance. Of modest dimensions, it occupies the lowest part of the land between the two peaks of Capital Hill. It is surrounded by buildings on three sides. The Senate Palace in the centre, the Conservatori Palace on the right and the Capital Museum on the left. The forth side of the square has a terrace with a panoramic view over the city.
