A private collection open to all
The Thyssen Bornemisza Museum is to be found within the Villahermosa Palace, and was built in the late 18th century. Housed within is a collection of works of art bought by certain members of the Thyssen family since the 1920's. Part of it was entrusted to the Spanish State in 1988 for a period of 9 years, and then opened to the public as of 1992.
This collection enables visitors to trace the evolution of western art from the most primitive of Italian painters right up to the 20th century, via names such as Caravage, Goya, Rubens, Monet, Van Gogh or Pollock.
