The jewel in the crown of the island of museums is without doubt the Pergamon Museum which comes highly recommended for its rich collection from Graeco-Roman antiquity (Antikensammlung). You'll be impressed by the of shrine of the Pergamom, dedicated to Athena by the people of Troy, which dates from around 160 BC and illustrates the clash of the Gods against the Giants.
You can also see also the gate of the Agora de Miletin in its full enormity. The Islamic section of the museum is also in its own way spectacular. Stretching right back to Ancient Babylon times, you'll find yourself spellbound by the gate of Isthar and the façade of the inner court of the Palace of Assour which originates from the first century AD. On the first floor, you will find rugs, woodwork, ceramics and architectural monuments, typical of Islamic art, more specifically from Jordan, including the façade of the Palace of Mehetta which dates from the middle of the seventh century. Admission is free on the first Sunday of every month and bank holidays. You can gain access to all the museums on the island, the Museuminsel, at a cost of 8DM for adults, 4DM for children and 2DM for the unemployed.
