Altes und Neues Museum
As its name indicates, the Altes Museum (old museum) heralded the construction of a series of museums on the island. It was built in 1831 by Schinkel. In 1859, the architect Friedrich August Stüler built a second museum to the north of the first and so it took the name of the Neues Museum (New Museum).
The former holds private exhibitions of contemporary art, though it also intends to hold collection from classical antiquity and Graeco-Roman sculpture set in their rightful historical, geographical and archaeological context. The "Neues Museum" is home to other collections which cannot be displayed elsewhere owing to their enormity. Admission is free on the first Sunday of every month and bank holidays. You can gain access to all the museums on the island at the Museuminsel (8DM for adults, 4DM for children and 2DM for the unemployed).
